I went away on the weekend and was unable to take my dog so arranged for her to stay with a friend.
I picked her up last night and as a matter of course asked how she’d been over the weekend. My friend said that there had been a couple of issues.
Oh oh, I thought.
On a Saturday morning walk along the beach Monty just took off running along the beach and no amount of calling her brought her back. Apparently they were about one kilometre away from the car and Monty just kept running back to the car without stopping and running really fast. Nothing had precipitated this, she just did it. Naturally my friend was freaking out and thinking the worst. She could have gone anywhere in some sort of a panic.
Luckily she was waiting by the car when my friend arrived back there. Phew!
The next day they were on her property up in the hills and a woman rode her horse through the property which she does regularly.
Monty was freaked out by the horse, barked at it and ran between its legs because she was freaked out. Luckily, again, the horse was a fairly calm horse and luckily the rider was an experienced rider and it went no further. There are so many what ifs here. The horse could have killed Monty with its hooves, the horse could have thrown its rider or the horse could have bolted. I’m so thankful that none of this happened and that everyone survived in one piece. Phew!
I must say I’m now hesitant to ask this friend again to look after Monty. If she does have her again, at least she now knows what might happen and take steps to prevent it.

As much as I hate to do it (and with 8 dogs, I REALLY hate to do it), sometimes the cost of a professional boarding facility is worth the peace of mind knowing your dog(s) is/are safe.
