Peak hour

May 31, 2011 by Jen

Traffic. Day 182/365.

Tuesday, 24 May 2011, Day 182/365.

It’s pretty much dark around 5.30pm these days. It’s just under a month to go until the shortest day of the year not that I want to wish the time away because it goes too damn quickly as it is.

I have to cross a busy arterial road to get my son from after school care which I’ve kept him in while out of work because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get him back in when I got work again. He enjoys being there too.

So I have to wait at the pedestrian lights for what seems like an age in the cold, dark and sometimes wet. At least I know I’ve got a warm house to get back to and hopefully I’ve remembered to take my apron off this time after cooking.

Where does it go?

In-between appointments. Day 181/365.

Monday, 23 May 2011, Day 181/365.

I  had two meetings in the city with over an hour to kill between the end of the first one and the start of the second one. I walked around and browsed in shops and then just decided to go and have a coffee.

As it turns out the first one was a successful meeting and it’s resulted in me getting at least one month’s work which I started on Friday. The hours are pretty good, the money’s not bad and the work will be a blessed relief after nearly four months out of paid employment.

See the headline at the top of the page of the open paper? I only noticed it when writing this post and I wonder where those four months went. I knew that my period of unemployment wouldn’t last forever and I know I will look back upon it wistfully.

Windy walk

May 29, 2011 by Jen

Linear Park, Underdale. Day 180/365.

Sunday, 22 May 2011, Day 180/365.

This photo makes the day look a lot brighter than it actually was. It was cold and windy but we all enjoyed getting out amongst it anyway. There’s nothing like seeing lovely scenery when you’re out walking and I used to walk along here all the time when I worked nearby.

The building I worked in still stands, but the rest of the campus has been knocked down, land sold off and mega-sized houses built in its place.

Annual football outing

May 28, 2011 by Jen

At my annual football outing. Day 179/365.

Saturday, 21 May 2011, Day 179/365.

Once a year I get together with friends and we head off to an AFL football match. This is kind of ironic seeing as I never watch the game on television and don’t follow a team at all.

I do like the atmosphere at the game, although for nearly $39 for an adult ticket I bloody well should enjoy the game. Luckily it’s a heck of a lot cheaper for kids. Fortunately the $39 includes a free bus ride there which saves having to drive and find a park. I love it when we leave on the bus and we get our own lane and whiz past all the cars at a standstill.

This particular game wasn’t very well attended and unfortunately the team we went to support lost, but we had a fun afternoon nonetheless.

Date day

May 25, 2011 by Jen

At the cinema. Day 178/365.

Friday, 20 May 2011, Day 178/365.

Every second Friday The Surfer has a day off work and because I’ve not worked on Fridays for a long time we’ve made this our date day when the kids are all at school.

I really enjoy the time I get to spend with him without anyone else around and because I’m a full-time mum, I nearly always have my son around. His kids are with his ex half the time.

Last Friday we went to see a movie, ‘The Source Code’. I still don’t quite think I get it but at least it made us think and debate it after we finished watching it. So many other movies we don’t do this.

Other Friday’s we might go op-shopping or go out for lunch or run errands.

I cherish these days and I’m glad we’ve started the tradition.

Reframing

The red stripes. Day 177/365.

Thursday, 19 May 2011, Day 177/365.

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling really down on myself with nothing really on the horizon to look forward to, but things have been afoot in my head and now in my life.

You see, I thought rather than wake up in the morning and think negatively about the day or weeks ahead, I’d wake up and think about what I had to look forward to. A friend also had a chat to me about putting things positively rather than negatively when she heard me say something to a mutual friend about my job situation.

Some days all I might have to look forward to is just be that I’m alive and well and so are my loved ones, although that’s a pretty significant thing. Other days it might be catching up with a friend for coffee, or seeing my man that day. And then soon I will have more work to look forward to, that’s the plan.

Last Thursday I took this photo while I was waiting for a recruitment consultant to come and talk to me about some temp work. I’d also been contacted by another recruitment consultant via LinkedIn for a potential job opportunity. Other job applications are in the pipeline and so is something else non-job related – just going to firm up details.

I also did a soft-launch of my new website. It’s kind of ironic that the website is focused mainly about online/digital and the two aforementioned jobs are both focused more on writing.

Seen better days. Day 176/365.

Wednesday, 18 May 2011, Day 176/365.

Sometimes when things aren’t really neat and pristine they’re a lot more interesting. Although, when I moved into my house my fence was a bit like this. It was interesting but unfortunately I had to get it replaced when I got the carport done.

So, sometimes when things aren’t really neat and pristine, they’re expensive to replace. And unfortunately they don’t stay in good condition when trucks or cars reverse into them.
