Sunset

November 16, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

As we go through a bit of a cold snap here – it’s supposed to be warmer this time of year – I thought I’d post a photo I took when we went camping around New Year’s Eve last year.

It was stinking hot and this was the best time of night when the sun went down because the day heat disappeared along with the flies. I can’t believe how many flies there were. We needed an extra hand just to shoo flies away from our faces and food.

Despite the flies it was a great camping spot. We hardly saw anybody, the beach was beautiful and it was perfect for the younger kids because the water stayed shallow for a long way out from shore so it was safe for them to run around in.

Sleeping right by the sea was also very peaceful with the sound of the waves coming to shore. I can hear them now…..

More internet for me

November 15, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

Today is my second day of a faster internet connection. I can’t believe I put up with dialup as long as I did.

When I first started blogging two and a half years ago, I would have to go to my study/spare room, turn on the computer, wait an age for it to boot up, dialup, and wait for all of that. I would then wait another age for my email to open up and then wait for the window I’m typing in now to open up to write a blog entry.

A couple of months ago I decided to upgrade my computer and bought a laptop. This meant that I didn’t have to go to the study – all the way at the other end of the house – but I could do my blog entries from the kitchen or from the lounge room. It still involved getting the phone cord out of the drawer, unplugging my telephone, plugging in the dialup stuff and dialling up and waiting ages for email and web browser to open.

With my Flickr account, uploading photos from home was also a nightmare because they would take ages to upload and then ages to save any descriptions and titles.

Then a few weeks ago I started researching broadband plans in earnest. I tried Telstra Bigpond but was not at all impressed with the salesperson I got a hold of. I also didn’t like that if you went over your limit you would be slugged for extra costs and I can’t afford an unlimited plan.

I ended up going with Internode. They have a pretty good reputation, excellent technical support as I have found out when hooking up my sister with her broadband and then again with mine. Plus geek friends of mine use and recommend them. The only thing I think they could improve on is their online technical support documentation. The documentation they do have is useful up to a point but for a relative newbie like myself there are glaring holes. It’s just as well their telephone support is so good – the only drawback being the wait times.

Now I’m using my computer so much that my eyes hurt. I’ve had some extra paid work on and have been really busy doing that this week but that’s winding down now so my internet usage at home will be more for fun now.

Opening jars that are really hard

November 14, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

The other night I cooked myself a chickpea curry with some veges. I chucked a few spices, a can of tomatoes, the chickpeas and some veges and let it simmer. I cooked up the rice and thought I’d enjoy it with some plain yoghurt and some mango chutney.

Try as hard as I could, I just could not open the lid to the new jar of mango chutney. The veins in my head nearly popped with the exertion. It was really frustrating. I ran the jar under hot water which usually loosens it a bit and still it would not budge.

I had to stop trying so started eating my dinner but not liking defeat I still had a couple of tries opening it and still it would not budge.

Last night when I was washing the dishes I had my rubber gloves on which have a grip on the fingers so wet dishes don’t slip out. I was wiping cupboards and there was the annoying jar of mango chutney. I picked it up while wearing my gloves and it occurred to me that they would make a good grip on the glass. Sure enough, I was able to open it.

There you have it – my tip for the week.

Short and sweet

November 13, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

No time for a very meaningful post today. It’s 9pm and I’ve been trying to unsuccessfully configure my new broadband account and I’ve got work to do that I promised I would have done by tomorrow. So off to do my work..

UPDATE: Finally got my broadband working after having to call technical support today (14 Nov). What a treat to go from a very slow dialup at home to a faster connection. It’s not that great as I haven’t chosen the fastest plan, but it’s much better.

Farm land, with a bit of vodka

November 12, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

We went to visit family yesterday. It was a flying visit as we came back today. On the way over we travelled the last bit on dirt roads and stopped to take some photos.

I have to figure out why the scenery setting on my camera really washes out the photos. I’ve played with this photo a bit in Photoshop to add some colour back in.

If this photo had been taken about 8 hours later there would have been some excellent shots of lightning. We haven’t had a decent rain in months and last night it bucketed down, accompanied by a lightning and thunder storm. Of course, this has happened too late for the farmers as they’re trying to reap their crops and the rain at this late stage doesn’t help one bit.

Last night we stayed at my sister’s place and she’d organised to have some friends over for dinner. I took the makings of Cosmopolitans and had we had a couple of jugs between us. I only stopped making more jugs because I ran out of cranberry juice.

When I went to bed I left half a bottle of vodka on the table and all the others were well and truly hooking into the wine.

When I got up this morning and started doing a bit of a clean-up, I found that my bottle of vodka was gone. As there was no empty bottle lying around I assumed the adults didn’t drink it. I asked my 15 year old nephew, his mate, and my 14 year old niece if they drank it. They said they had some but wouldn’t own up to having the lot.

After talking to my sister she told me they’d gone for a walk down the street late last night so it sounds like my bottle of vodka went down there too. And this is by the boy that will be coming to live with me nexdt year.

Another rule to add to the list of house rules – Do not drink your auntie’s alcohol because she won’t be as nice about it next time.

Bathing through two generations

November 11, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

Do these two cuties look at all similar?

Here’s the first one taken in about 1967.

Inbath

And the next one was taken in 2002.

And if you didn’t already guess, the black and white photo was me and the colour photo was my son.

The kid

November 10, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

Today is a pupil free day which means of course that it’s not child free for me. It happens to be the one day during the working week that I don’t go to my paid job so I’ve got JJ at home with me this morning.

He’s been showing me the sort of behaviour that his after school carer has been experiencing – cheeky (not a nice cheeky), answering back, and generally not listening when asked to do or stop something.

At the supermarket apart from having a dummy spit because I wouldn’t buy him something he actually wasn’t too bad. I just switched off at this stage and ignored all the behaviour I didn’t like and found him sulking around corners.

At the checkout he was chatting to one of the girls we see fairly regularly there. He told her all about how naughty he’s been. I said, tell her what you missed out on doing today because you’ve been naughty this week. He proceeded to tell her and everyone else in the checkout queues who was around because he hasn’t got a quiet voice, that he missed out on seeing Santa at the Magic Cave this week because of his behaviour at after school care.

He knows he’s being naughty but is almost quite proud of it. I don’t know if it’s sinking in that he’s missing out on stuff he really wants to do because of his behaviour.

It’s a long – hard road.
