My participation in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival was one show I went to last night called Temptation with Christa Hughes (from Machine Gun Fellatio fame among other things) and Svetlanka Bunic (makes sounds with the accordian like I never heard or imagined).
I would kill for a voice like Christa’s and her show was fascinating. As she said at the end, ‘If you liked the show tell your friends to come along. If you didn’t like it tell your enemies to come along.’
If you are embarrassed hearing stories and songs about sex, drugs and rock and roll then you wouldn’t like this show but if you like being entertained with song, talk and mime (along with old movie soundtracks) then you will love it.
She sung with a megaphone and a microphone and the megaphone made a great sound. It was reminiscent of the gramaphone record sound – not that I’m really familiar with that but I have heard that sound on movies.
Afterwards we went to the Kool Kat Festival Club where a real mix of people were hanging out listening to Chad Romero’s Cabernet Cabaret. Chad did not do it for me at all. I think Lucifer’s Lounge do cabaret songs much better. There were lots of people who must not share my opinion about Chad though as they were up on the dance floor dancing. It brought back memories of mum and dad going to cabaret’s in the local town hall when I was a kid. Although dad isn’t much of a dancer but maybe cabaret brought out the groove in him.
I wish I had been able to go and see more cabaret shows as it’s a great festival and a good atmosphere and I recommend it.
