Making vodka jelly

May 5, 2004 by Jen at Semantically driven

I made some vodka jelly shots with some success last night. I’d searched for ways of making it on the web and all the results I found were quite different and many sites mentioned measurements in imperial which is useless for an Aussie gal. So this is what I did.

Bought a bottle of Smirnoff vodka, bought some disposable shot glasses from a little place in the Central Market ($7.90 for 200) and used some port wine jelly I had sitting in the cupboard.

I dissolved the crystals in half a cup of boiling water

I then added 1 cup of vodka and then poured the contents into about 20 disposable shot glasses.

I had them all on a tray which I popped into the fridge.

It didn’t take long for them to set and I think the port wine jelly is a no no as it didn’t taste that flash. I’ve bought some raspberry jelly today which has 20% extra crystals (100g) in it so I’ll have to adjust my half cup boiling water and 1 cup vodka accordingly. I can’t do maths.

The reason I’m making them is that I’m going to a friends 40th on Friday night and I think they will go down very well. Will update on my next try tonight.

I know, it’s sad

May 5, 2004 by Jen at Semantically driven

As I mentioned in a previous post I am addicted to Big Brother and this year looks to be no different. It’s only been on for a few days and I’m beginning to form an opinion on which housemates I like. Catherine and Trevor seem like the two most grounded people and therefore we’re not seeing that much of them. I think Trevor is sussing out the situation a bit and he will ’emerge’ at some stage.

I was appalled that Ashalea had never heard of the Berlin wall. I know it doesn’t exist any more but she must have been living with her head down a hole to never have heard of it. Perhaps this will be a good growing up experience for her and maybe I’m being a bit harsh as I remember I was a pretty naive 19 year old.

Meanwhile, to find out all the behind the news on Big Brother look at Behind Big Brother.

I hate Mondays

May 3, 2004 by Jen at Semantically driven

I have bad Mondayitis today. It doesn’t help that I was woken up abruptly at 4.19am this morning by the phone ringing. By the time I picked it up the person had hung up. They rang back a couple of minutes later and still nobody at the other end. I took the phone off the hook then so I hope they rang heaps and got the Telstra 101 message so they had to pay for the call.. Hopefully it doesn’t happen tonight. It freaks me out when the phone rings after 10pm or before 7am as it should only be bad news then.

My ceiling is now finished so I will be able to paint. Oh joy!!! I’ve booked a couple of days off to get stuck into it without child hanging around wanting to help – bless him. Pity he wasn’t a bit older and I would welcome his help with open arms. Have got someone coming round this evening to quote on sanding the floorboards. I feel like I should be standing at the front door with a handful of money just giving it away as that’s how it feels at the moment.

Anti-climax

May 3, 2004 by Jen at Semantically driven

Big Brother started last night and it was a bit of an anti-climax. All the 14 housemates are ‘full-on’ according to them and nearly all of them are in it for the ‘experience’. I’m sorry – doesn’t anyone want to win a heap of money? One person said they’d like to win and I immediately warmed to him – Trevor I think it was. I haven’t downloaded 10mb worth of software to watch the live streaming and I don’t think I’ll bother doing that. Half an hour a night and a Sunday night eviction is enough for me to decide who I do and don’t like and who I think might win.

House dramas

May 2, 2004 by Jen at Semantically driven

After this week I would say never buy an old house – and if you do buy an old house make sure you get a decent building inspection. My ceiling was stuffed when I bought the house and the building inspector didn’t even go up into the roof cavity because of all the insulation up there. If they had they may have found the damaged ceiling joists and I would have offered less for the house so I could get it fixed. The job is going to cost me double originally quoted because of all of this. I suppose I count my blessings that it wasn’t worse and the whole woodwork in the roof needed replacing. They’re coming back tomorrow to finish off and then I can get stuck into the painting. I’m also going to get the floor in my bedroom sanded as the carpet was awful and I got the workmen to rip it up. So my bedroom is having a ceiling to floor makeover – literally.

Yesterday we got away from it all and went up the Adelaide Hills to a friends new property near Macclesfield. It was lovely up there and even though it was a moving in party I didn’t actually do that much and everything was done my mid afternoon anyway so we were able to relax for the rest of the day. There was a playmate there for my son so he was occupied therefore not bothering me too much. Bliss.
