Still doing it

December 11, 2010 by Jen

Chandelier

I’m pretty pleased with myself that I’ve managed to do nearly three weeks of the daily photo. Every day I’ve used my iPhone and the Hipstamatic app to shoot the photos.

I also have the Flickr app on my phone which I use to upload the photo as it allows me to immediately add it to a set and tag it and so on which saves me having to go back in via the web and do it that way.

The photo above isn’t one of my dailies, it’s an extra that I really like. I took it our work dinner a couple of weeks ago. We had a room to ourselves and this light was in the centre of the room.

This building

Work building #workwed. Day 17/365

This shows the building where I work. It used to be a furniture store many years ago and the sign is still there which I kind of like.

More recently than that it was a pool hall where I spent a few nights here and there playing pool. That was in the late 1990s – before child.

Since then it’s been split up into offices.

And there you have it. A very short and pretty uninformed history of this building.

Stormy

December 9, 2010 by Jen

Before the storms rolled in. Day 16/365.

Yesterday Adelaide experienced some pretty wild, wet weather for this time of year. Parts of Adelaide flooded and it got quite windy. Farmers are supposed to be harvesting but they can’t when it’s raining and the wind caused a lot of crop damage.

The photo above was taken in the morning, about six-seven hours before the storm arrived and there wasn’t really a hint, apart from maybe the wild clouds. That’s why I took the photo and focused on the sky because of the clouds.

I couldn’t sleep last night because there was a continual thunderstorm and lots of lightning to go with it. It’s now midnight of the night after and while I’m tired I can’t get to sleep.

Things ticking over in the mind – or my mind is as stormy at the moment as the weather was yesterday?

Quite helpful

He's doing the ironing. Day 15/365

He’s been going to Scouts for over a year now and it’s the one thing that he wants to go to nearly all the time – he looks forward to it.

They do some good stuff at Scouts which is probably one of the reasons, or the main reason, that he enjoys going.

One of the things they did recently was learn how to iron so ever since then he’s been nagging me to iron something.

Last night I finally had the time to supervise and got out three things for him to do – two skirts and a blouse – nothing that he could really wreck. Luckily I did supervise because they mustn’t have told him never to leave the iron face down on the ironing board. Luckily my skirt escaped unscathed.

I had to go over a couple of things but he got most of the wrinkles out. He even had the nerve to complain that I gave him three things to iron. I could have given him a lot more.

Not sure how long this eagerness will last but I’d better milk it while it’s there I think.

My second week in daily photos

December 7, 2010 by Jen

Christmas is coming. Day 8/365

Into week two of my photo a day. The photo above is in Rundle Mall, Adelaide. Yes, the christmas decorations have been up for a little while now. My trial of denial is not really working about christmas not coming. I don’t know why I bother.

Waiting for the tram. Day 9/365

Aptly titled ‘Waiting for the tram’. Trams had just been in both directions which is why there was hardly anyone on the platform. It’s peak time of night for commuters. The tram shown is one of the newest ones and I’m dreading catching this type when it’s a really really hot day and it’s jam packed because the air conditioning is not very powerful. No wonder people faint on the tram. I’ve witnessed it happening to two people.

View from boardroom window #workwed. Day10/365

This was taken from the window of our board room at work.

Turns out he's quite good at lawn bowls. Day 11/365

My boy is a natural lawn bowler apparently. His scout group went bowling the other night. When I picked him up he was more excited about the can of free lemonade they got.

Keeping guard. Day 12/365.

Not sure if this is for sale or not. It’s out the front of a second hand furniture store. I wouldn’t want it in my house but I do wonder what he’s supposed to be saying.

One, two and three. Day 13/365.

The kids – mine and The Surfer’s. JJ is just about to throw the cushion at me. Little so and so!

Pt Noarlunga South. Day 14/365

Looking towards Port Noarlunga. The day before I went for my first summer swim. I was expecting it to be a bit cold, and it was until I got in the water. The temperature outside was about 37 degrees so it more than made up for the slight chill in the water..

I don’t know if this is the future of my blog, a weekly update in the form of a photo a day. What I think I’ll try and do is use the photo a day to tell a story of that day, instead of cramming it into a weekly update. As usual there’s things happening in my life I’d love to share but can’t. If this were just my private diary I would spill but I have at least two readers and they probably know someone that knows someone and word would get out. You know how it is.

Setting the record straight

December 6, 2010 by Jen

Oprah’s coming to Australia to do some shows – you may have heard about this. I watched her show last week where there was a segment done by our own Network Ten’s Carrie Bickmore about what us Ossie’s like. Apparently she would have us all going to McAfe’s and having a cup of coffee.

Mmm, really? I watched this segment with my mouth open in disbelief. Really, coffee at McDonald’s? Oh no not I, and not many many other Australians.

I realised as she kept going on about McDonald’s and then as the healthy McDonald’s wraps came out to the audience that they were obviously a sponsor. I guess they paid a fortune for that little infomercial but how many of Oprah’s viewers would have us Ossies (by the way we pronounce it Ozzies) all sipping a latte at McDonalds?

There’s been an uproar over here in Australia about this on Twitter and on the web.

A couple of stories include:

  • Coffee houses in a froth over Oprah’s McAfe sell-out
  • Modern media: it’s all just a little bit fancy

So us Ozzies do love our coffee but not necessarily McDonald’s coffee. You can’t believe everything you see on Oprah.
