Don’t blog about bodily functions

November 23, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

During my blog reading today I came across a list of How not to blog by Metro Dad while guest posting on TheZeroBoss. In the comments section one commenter wrote, ‘No explicit discussion of bodily functions.’ Well that’s just like waving a red flag to me to blog about something like this. And what better place to start than from the ‘Regurgitate’ post on Sarsaparilla.

A summary of this post by Meredith on Sarsaparilla said that when she was 15 she went to the Crystal Ballroom in St Kilda to see Nick Cave. He was very under the influence of something and while singing leaned over the stage and vomited on her. She became a minor celebrity that night because Nick Cave had vomited on her. Now I would tell that story because of the Nick Cave element alone, and she invited us to share our stories.

So I did:

‘When I lived in London I went to a party in Brixton. I had too much to drink and needed to throw up. I knew I wouldn’t make it to the toilet, and I couldn’t get out or find a back door, so I vomited in a pot plant. Luckily nobody saw me (I don’t think).

Not wanting to anyone to see the evidence, I buried it under the dirt of the potplant, leaving the potplant as though it hadn’t been touched. Then I had to go find the bathroom to wash my hands.’

It’s a bit gross I know (if you’ve made it this far) but I wonder how often this type of thing comes up in conversations with (usually) close friends. I know I’ve told my story to some people and I’ve listened to their stories with oohs and omigod’s in the particularly gross or funny parts.

Let’s face it, you can’t control when you might throw up, even if you have suffered from morning sickness while pregnant. I became pregnant while in London and was too scared to catch the tube because I didn’t want to subject people to see what I’d recently had to eat. So I’d catch the bus and sit near an exit with my hand poised over the stop button.

Back to my original point about not blogging about bodily functions. Well I’ve just done it and I’ve started at the top end. I don’t think I’m gross enough to travel down the intestinal system to talk about the other end but I have been involved in conversations, particularly with others who’ve travelled in the third world, about just that.

Back when things seemed simpler

November 22, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

This photo was taken almost one year ago. My how he’s grown since then.

Looks like I have to find alternative arrangements for after school care for the lad. Shit!

How come a boy that’s pretty bright just doesn’t get when he’s pushed things too far?

And then they turn around and surprise you

November 21, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

The other night JJ and I went to my sister’s birthday barbeque. Unfortunately I’ve reached the stage now with him that I go to social occasions with trepidation about how his behaviour might turn out.

I need not have worried. He was very well behaved. He chatted to the woman in the wheelchair who has muscular dystrophy and has very limited movement. He started asking me why she was in the chair and as I didn’t know that much about her and as she was sitting quite close to us and could hear everything he was saying, I said to him that he should ask her. She invited him to do so, so he moved closer and gave her the third degree.

He even fed her some corn chips as she is unable to feed herself. I puffed up a bit as the proud parent because it’s not that often lately that I’ve seen his compassionate side.

He also endeared himself to a couple of other adults who thought he was absolutely lovely and want to have him round to their respective houses. This is after my sister babysat him on Friday night and he was constantly rude to her.

Ah, what a paradox he is.

ABBA in the last 30 years

November 20, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

I was getting dinner ready the other night while listening to a disco CD I compiled as part of the music for my recent 40th. A disco compilation is nothing without an ABBA song, in this instance, Dancing Queen.

As I was stirring the tuna mornay and my very grumpy son was in the bath, I had time to think, and the song Dancing Queen got me thinking about ABBA. I first distinctly remember them in the 1970s with their song SOS. That’s when I became an ABBA fan. I couldn’t get enough of them and this was when they were huge around the world. They came to Adelaide to play, they had numerous television specials on, Young Talent Time invariably covered an ABBA song.

They gradually faded from peoples’ consciousness and when I got the ABBA Arrival record for my 21st as a joke, I sort of went along with it by taking the piss out of ABBA with the friends that gave it to me cause it wasn’t cool then to like ABBA, but I was secretly quite glad to receive this as a gift. I obviously bowed very easily to peer group pressure and felt unable to voice my opinion. The record was something to add to my collection and is still there to this day as I would have a hard time ever getting rid of my records.

In the latter part of the 1980s some people used to take say they didn’t like ABBA because they were very 70s kitsch and we’d just got over the 1970s fashions and in a decade’s time we’d be doing the same with the 1980s. ABBA were just a pop band, not really serious musicians. On the surface maybe, but I think because they actually were serious musicians they just made it seem effortless.

I’m an amateur singer and have taken singing lessons and trying to sing an ABBA song well, is quite hard. The ABBA girls had excellent vocal talent with great harmonies and good ranges. My rendition of Dancing Queen is really quite awful compared to them.

But ABBA gradually, or not so gradually, became cool again when the film Muriel’s Wedding was released in 1994. Because the background music was mainly ABBA’s it raised the band in people’s minds again and we weren’t too scared to say that ABBA was really great after all.

So I don’t mind knowing all the words to ABBA songs, they are great singalong music after all.

Biggles, eat your heart out

November 19, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

Because I’m blogging every day during the month of November I decided I’d better start doing some exciting stuff to blog about. So I went up for a plane flight in a bi-plane – a 1942 Tiger Moth that has been completely rebuilt.

Truthfully I didn’t do it just to blog about it. A friend organised it for me as her dad flies planes (not Tiger Moth’s as you need additional qualifications to fly them because they’re a bit harder) but his mate flies them. It was part of my 40th birthday present.

Before I got in the plane the pilot asked if I was a thrill-seeker. Um, yes, I think I am, I said.

I put on my leather flying cap and my goggles and off we went for a flight along the south coast near Noarlunga up to Port Willunga and then inland over McLaren Vale and then we did a loop-de-loop. It was great. It was really freaky looking back at the last stage of the turn and seeing the horizon behind me. As I coped with that, he asked if we could do a wing down and I said, yes of course.

It’s the first time I’ve ever been in an open plane like this and it was a weird feeling at first. I had to keep wiping my sweaty hands on my pants but I got into it and had a look at friends’ houses from the air.

Overexposed

November 18, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

The last few lots of photos I’ve taken on my camera I’ve noticed have been really overexposed. It was really starting to get on my nerves and there’s only so much you can do in Photoshop.

After taking some more overexposed photos last night I finally got out the manual and had a bit of a look around on the web. Sure enough, there is an exposure setting on my camera that was set to +2 which was why all that unwanted light was getting in. For the record I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ20GN digital camera.

I changed the setting and took a few practise shots including this closeup of my flowering gerberas.

I like it when I successfully work things out.

Gotta love em when they’re asleep

November 17, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

JJ has the things he likes to sleep with sometimes. This is the first time he’s slept with this doll. This doll used to be mine when I was a kid, you can tell it’s an older one because the eyes open and shut.

This look of peacefulness comes at the end of a particularly awful day for him behaviour wise. It seems he goes through a bad day or two of being really naughty and rude and then he’s fine for a while and then it all happens again and I’m yanked out of my sense of all’s well.

Yesterday morning I had to put him in time out before he even went to school, then he had time out at school and when I picked him up from after school care yesterday I could tell that his carer had had problems with him as well.

He’s also naughty with the parents at school in the morning who sit down and read with the kids. It’s reached the stage where they won’t read to him any more because he’s so rude to them.

After I brought him home from after school care last night we had a bit of a chat, but these chats I have with him have no effect whatsoever. I shed some tears in sheer frustration because his behaviour is affecting his learning to read. Obviously I read with him but I send him to school to learn more, not to miss out because his behaviour can’t be handled.

This morning I made an appointment with the school principal to have a chat to him. I’m at the stage now where I think we need professional help. Even though I’ve got nothing to compare JJ’s behaviour with, apart from observing my friends’ kids, JJ’s behaviour is a bit out of control and if there’s some sort of problem I’d rather find out what it is and deal with it armed with knowledge.
