Sydney – part 1

February 28, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

So I spent almost three days in Sydney. It’s so much bigger and vibrant and crowded than Adelaide. It was also quite humid and the cabs have vinyl seats and some with barriers around the drivers. People who catch cabs in Sydney must be violent or something.

We arrived at the hotel and because we didn’t want smoking rooms we had to wait for our rooms so couldn’t change before the first meeting. It didn’t bother me as I wasn’t really casual but my two colleagues were and it didn’t really matter as it was a pretty casual meeting. We were an hour late because the cab changeover time in Sydney is 3pm and 3am and we were in the thick of the 3pm changeover and our cab just never showed. The hotel concierge just went and hailed a cab which we should have done in the first place.

The meeting went ok then it was back to the hotel for a swim and a spa, an absolute must on any work trip I say. The only thing I don’t like about hotel spas is that they turn off automatically every ten minutes. At the conference in Queensland there were loads of kids and we could just ask them to do it – you know how kids love pressing buttons – but we didn’t have that luxury here so we had to take it in turns ourselves.

We were staying not far from Chinatown so had Chinese food for dinner – mmmm, mmmm. I used to get Chinese takeaway a fair bit in my younger, going to the pub lots, days and it mainly consisted of lots of onion, some type of sauce and the meat and vegetables. In other words not very appetising. I’ve since discovered that you can eat good Chinese food and it is quite delicious if you go to the right place, so gradually I go eat at proper Chinese restaurants.

We were sitting outside watching the world go by as it was quite a warm and still humid evening and I was able to buy a souvenir for my son from a vendor doing the rounds along the street to all the diners. It was a hand-held thing with a clear plastic sphere at the top of the handle. You press the button and the lights inside the sphere go around and it looks really good at night because they’re a bit neon. Jaycee Junior absolutely loves it thank goodness. My colleague and two people at the next table bought one each so were able to knock the price down a little bit. Not that it was really expensive.

I also saw Merlin from the last season of Big Brother walk past. My immediate reaction was that it was someone I knew, but of course I have never met the guy. It was a weird feeling.

Friday consisted of more meetings during the day of similar workplaces to our own and a bit of shopping at lunch time.

Friday night was the reason we were there though. We got frocked up as it was a formal do and walked around a bit trying to catch a cab. I was wearing high heels which I don’t normally do so wasn’t happy about walking around that early in the evening but they were fairly sensible high heels and not really high pointy stilettos. We managed to get a cab on George Street and headed over the bridge. We had no idea of what to expect from the evening so were full of anticipation and what if scenarios. What if we win an award. Will we have to make a speech? Will there be lots of people there or will it be a flop?

To be continued….

Three days childfree makes Jaycee a tired girl

February 27, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I’m back from Sydney and even managed to go out last night on top of not much sleep the night before and a filthy hangover that nothing would cure. Am tired – cannot talk, except to mention don’t type in the wrong URL for Typepad cause you might get a computer virus. Luckily I just updated my virus software.

Sydney tomorrow

February 23, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I am off to Sydney tomorrow morning for a few days so I don’t think blogging will be my top priority. There’s work to be done, an award ceremony to be attended and shopping to be done. Thank goodness for the web. I’ve researched where I want to go shopping, downloaded bus routes so I can get to the places I want hopefully a bit more quickly. I have a limited time on the Saturday so want to know exactly what I’m doing and exactly where I’m going on my shopping Saturday. I don’t keep in touch with anyone in Sydney anymore so don’t have to worry about catching up with friends.

I’m so excited. I have to pack for myself tonight and organise Jaycee Junior for tomorrow night as he’s being picked up from childcare by my sister and they’re going to a friend of hers for the evening. I’ve told him I’m going and first off he said he didn’t want my sister to look after him, but then he was annoyed that she wasn’t doing it now. Can’t win.

Be reminded, if you tell your toddler not to do something they WILL do it

February 21, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I was at a friend’s place on Friday evening and Jaycee Junior was in my face and got a bit too close to my boobs. I said to him please don’t hit mummy’s boobies because they’re a bit sore.

He immediately balled his hands up into fists and punched each boob with perfect precision quite hard. It really hurt. He got sent outside for a bit which he wasn’t happy about and eventually said sorry. I don’t actually think he was really sorry. He just wanted to go and feed the chookens not worry about mummy’s bruised boobies.

Baking lady

February 18, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I’ve been busy this morning. I made a vegetable frittata (with spinach and mushrooms). Yum. I’ve also just made a baked blackberry cheesecake. I think it might turn out a bit flat because I didn’t have an 18 inch tin, only a 20 inch but hopefully it will taste just fine. I’ve never made one of these before and am looking forward to trying it.

Jaycee Junior is packing up all the blocks he threw all over the floor then I’m putting Shrek 2 on for him so he can have a rest and I shall take the opportunity to have a rest also. I had yesterday off work because I had one of those headaches behind my eyes and knew that spending the day in front of the computer would make it ten times worse. Today isn’t that much better so I’m signing off now and shall go and close my eyes.

What it is about the blogs I like?

February 16, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

  1. They’re updated very frequently. The ones that update infrequently without saying so are a bit annoying and I tend not to go back after a while. A good example – Time Goes By. Even when Ronni Bennett (the author) doesn’t write an article she puts up an old photo. She’s had an interesting career and life by the looks and lets her readers know when she’s having a break.
  2. Honesty. A blog doesn’t have to be about anything in particular, someone’s life is fine – but honesty draws me in. Dooce is a prime example here. She’s upfront about who she is and what she does and a good writer to boot.
(I write my blog anonymously and it’s becoming like a secret life so I’m thinking of coming out but don’t know if I’m quite ready for this. Am interested in anyone’s thoughts who reads this – let me know what you think.)
  3. Which brings me to the next point. Good writing, or at least sentences that make sense and are spelt correctly. Numbers 1 and 2 above fall into this category for me. But it’s not just good writing, the author needs to be passionate about their blog and what they’re writing. Loobylu – the only Australian blog I read regularly – is passionate about her subject matter and it really shows in her blog and she’s taken it the next step with the Month of Softies. Sewing and crafty things aren’t really my cup of tea but I’m still drawn to reading her blog.
  4. I like some humour and Waiter rant is great for this for me. I find that this blog isn’t updated as often as I would like but too bad. I know what it’s like to work and not get much time to blog and I can do some of mine at work cause I can type quick and it’s like a smoko for me. Back to Waiter rant though, I enjoy the way he blogs about what happens to him at work.
  5. I really like an ‘about me’ section in blogs as I like to know who’s communicating to me although this can be a load of crap. Bizgirl – international librarian of mystery is one such blog where according to The Sydney Morning Herald it’s not a 26 year old female but a married man with children pretending to be Bizgirl. It’s a bit like someone lying in an internet dating ad but not as harmful.

So this leaves me to wonder where blogging will go. I’m pleased I’ve not grown sick of writing my own blog. I find what helps keep me going is reading other people’s blogs and being inspired to add to my own. Blogs seem to be growing exponentially and I think it’s a great way to find out more about how other people live and I think it will continue for some time.

Valentine’s Day

February 15, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

This came to me via email. Don’t know who wrote it but I kinda agree. Many women at work got flowers yesterday and I think many of them would have killed their partners if they hadn’t.

Hearts and roses and kisses galore,
What the hell is all that shit for??
People get mushy and start acting queer,
It is definitely the most annoying day of the year.
This day needs to get the hell over with and pass,
Before I shove something up Cupid’s ass.
I’ll spend the day so drunk I can’t speak
And wear black for the rest of the week.
Guys act all sweet, but soon it will fade,
For all they are doing is trying to get laid.
The arrow Cupid shot at me must not have hit,
Cause I think this love thing is a crock of shit.
So, here’s my story… what else can I say?
Love bites my ass… Fuck Valentines Day!!
