Lunch

August 31, 2011 by Jen

Guinness please. Day 274/365.

Wednesday, 24 August 2011, Day 274/365.

Lunch on a Wednesday. I had a huge schnitzel and an imperial pint of Guinness.

An imperial pint is about 600ml therefore quite large. I thought it would make me a bit sleepy during the afternoon and it did to some extent. Probably not the best idea but I enjoyed it at the time.

Homework in primary school

August 30, 2011 by Jen

Homework. Day 273/365.

Tuesday, 23 August 2011, Day 273/365.

I don’t remember having that much homework to do in primary school. Have I just blotted it from my memory? I know we had some bits and pieces to do but I don’t remember having to do that much.

My son just about always has something to do and the end of the day after we get home is the worst time for him to have work to do.

I wish they’d make him do it after school care but it’s probably good that it stays a fun place to be rather than a place that he has to do his work.

He’s tired by the time we get home from after school care and work and of course I have a multitude of things to do. And these are the nights when we don’t have other commitments like cub scouts or something else.

Somehow it mostly ends up being done but I don’t stress about it. Hopefully it’s teaching him some good habits for when he really will have to knuckle down and do some study later on in his schooling life.

Exhibition

Sunlight through the window. Day 272/365.

Monday, 22 August 2011, Day 272/365.

Not that long ago when I arrived home from work the sun had pretty much gone down. All of a sudden I need to wear my sunglasses home from work so I know that the days are getting longer.

As I walked to after school care to pick up my son I saw the sun shine through these orange windows. It was too good an opportunity to pass up to take a photo and use it for my photo of the day.

This might be one of the photos I choose for my upcoming photography exhibition. I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it or not here.

It all began a few months ago when I saw a call out to visual artists from a cafe/restaurant owner looking for work to hang on her walls. As I’ve been receiving really good feedback about my photos I decided to put myself forward. Why not add visual artist to my repertoire hey?

She had a look at my work on Flickr and agreed that she’d like to use my work. Nothing happened for a while and then I saw her recently. She’s had railings put up on her walls so there’s somewhere to hang work.

She’s also getting together an agreement between her and the artists that will use her space to showcase their work. I had a chat and we’ve agreed that we’ll wait until early next year for my work to be shown.

This means that I will have completed my Project 365 and therefore immediately have a theme for my exhibition. It also gives me some time to choose what to hang and get the stuff framed.

I’ll then have an exhibition opening on a Tuesday night – a night that this place isn’t normally open.

I have an idea for what I’ll use as frames and I really hope it comes through. I’m excited and yet quite nervous because it’s a first for me.

No sense no feeling?

Swimming on a winter's day. Day 271/365.

Sunday, 21 August 2011, Day 271/365.

We’ve been having some lovely weather here considering it’s the tail end of winter. I remember August as still being fairly cold but it’s been more like spring weather.

This has meant good walking weather along the beach and it’s meant I’ve dug out my thongs (flip-flops) to wear instead of shoes.

However, JJ decided to wear boardshorts and get into the water last weekend. I couldn’t believe that he immersed himself and went swimming. He didn’t even have a towel to dry off but then because the sun was shining and because he was constantly moving he didn’t really need a towel.

Near where The Surfer lives, the Onkaparinga River goes out into the sea and when the tide is going out it means there’s a great current in the river so the water moves you along – a bit like the lazy river in Waterbom Park in Kuta. JJ did this at least twice and he stated more than once that the water was warm. Rubbish.

I enjoyed watching him splash about and have a great time though.

Still life

August 27, 2011 by Jen

A little bit fruity. Day 270/365.

Saturday, 20 August 2011, Day 270/365.

Remember at school in art classes how you had to draw still life and fruit was usually involved?

I was pretty crap at drawing. I would much rather take a photo.

Sorry about the stain Henry

August 27, 2011 by Jen

Henry Wagons at The Wheaty. Day 269/365.

Friday, 19 August 2011, Day 269/365.

This man – Henry Wagons – and his band are heading off to the USA and Canada soon. I recommend going to see them. Last Friday night was the second time I’ve seen Henry Wagons (solo) and I loved it.

When we arrived I had to get out my credit card to prove I’d bought tickets. I also wanted to get out my camera because Henry was at the desk. I put my just purchased chocolate stout on the desk and was immediately told off because I’d just put it on his merchandise – a tea towel. I don’t think he told me off, but my girlfriend did. I was mortified. Of course it left a teeny little stain.

I asked if he still minded if I took a photo and he was very gracious and allowed me to. See above. I felt a wee bit guilty about not buying the stained tea towel and probably would have bought it on the way out but someone else had.

It was a great show because there weren’t heaps of people crowding us and we had a very good view. I’m so glad I went. He’s a great entertainer and aside from the music, the inter-song chat was excellent.

Organisation to the max just to get a night out

August 25, 2011 by Jen

Juice Extractor at The Gov. Day 268/365.

Thursday, 18 August 2011, Day 268/365.

My mates playing in their band. Yes, the lead singer is wearing flanellette pajamas. They’ve been slightly altered to be a bit of a groovy jumpsuit.

This was a Thursday night as the date above suggests which is a rare night for me to be out and about childfree but very liberating.

Although after dropping him off beforehand, then picking him up in the morning, dropping him off at school then heading off to work I was quite tired. This takes mighty organisation skills.

And I did it all again the next night. Stay posted.
