Rain

April 22, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

I have washed my windows, I have washing out on the line drying and I have washed my car.

That means it will rain really soon – won’t it?

Please come rain, otherwise our farmers’ water supply could be cut off, our fresh produce prices will go through the roof and we will have to rely on imports. And if I want to turn to wine to drown my sorrows I’ll have to fork out more for that too.

Competition – prizes

April 21, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

Ever since I’ve been a convert to Google Reader I’ve found it much easier to keep track of blogs I want to read. Consequently I’ve found heaps of new ones, including e-Moms at Home. The blog title is pretty self-explanatory, and let’s face it, I’d love to work at home blogging instead of having to go to work every day. Well a couple of days working out of the home and a couple of days in would suit me just fine thank you.

Anyhoo, they’re running a contest this month to celebrate being one year old and there’s heaps of prizes to be won. Go over, check it out and you might learn something, or you might win a prize.

Favourite beauty secret/product

April 19, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

Over at Crazy Hip Blog Mamas this week’s carnival of blogging is writing about your favourite beauty secret/product.

This was a no-brainer for me. Mine is sorbolene cream. I use it predominantly as a face cleanser and body moisturiser, and if I’ve caught a bit too much sun I use it on my face as well. Normally I use an SP15 moisturiser for my face on a daily basis.

The beauty of sorbolene cream is that it’s readily available (well here in Australia anyway), it works, and it’s cheap.

I don’t need to say anything more. Try some if you haven’t already.

Virginia Tech – photo memories

April 18, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

I first heard about the tragic shootings yesterday at Virginia Tech while browsing around various blogs and websites. It was all very shocking, but it wasn’t until I found the photos dedicated to the shooting (via BlogHer), including photos of the students who were shot that it really hit home.

All the words I read did not convey what these photos did.

Rest in Peace.

Don Imus and Alan Jones

April 17, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

It occurred to me after watching Media Watch regarding Alan Jones last night and having heard a bit about the Don Imus controversy that there are similarities but there are some big differences too.

The similarity is the racism by exhibited by both and the difference is that Don Imus was sacked but Alan Jones doesn’t look like being sacked any time soon. How would he be sacked when the Australian Prime Minister John Howard is a big fan. A lot of the public are big fans too, if the comments on the radio station 2GB regarding the recent Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) findings about his breaching the commercial radio code are anything to go by.

Not living in Sydney I don’t get the opportunity to listen to Alan Jones and even if I did, I probably wouldn’t because our views are so different.

Kim over at Larvatus Prodeo talks about Don Imus and Alan Jones in more detail.

The lighter moments of being a mum

April 15, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

After having a sort of lazy day this weekend we went to the library in the late afternoon. I picked out some books, JJ played a computer game and we went back out to the car. JJ had wanted to have a look around the garden near the library, so I put the bag of books in the car, and we did just that.

The garden consists of about 9 big planter boxes containing mostly herbs, with gravel paths around them. We started looking around, and I can’t remember how, but we started played chasey around the planter boxes. I think JJ initiated it but before I knew it I was IT and was running around the boxes trying to catch him so he could be IT. It was hard running with my slip-on sandles and my handbag flapping against my hip, but I managed a few shuffles to try and catch him.

As I rounded a corner trying to catch the elusive JJ I spied a couple sitting on a park bench near our chasey area. I looked at them, then looked at how I probably looked to them, then thought stuff it I’m playing chasey with my son. They can just watch, and watch they did as we continued.

After a few minutes of shuffling, running, catching up with each other, hiding from each other, and laughing, we had a look at the sculpture artwork in the garden. I wish I’d had my camera with me, and I will go back and take a photo, but it was a face with the nose cut off. Around the faces were about 15 different noses. I tried pulling off one of the 15 noses because it looked like you had to try and match a nose with the face, but of course they were all part of the sculpture and it wasn’t really a game.

And I must say that this all happened after leaving our house where JJ tidied up his room without me asking him to. He proudly showed me that he’d put everything away and it was all neat and tidy. I suitably and effusively congratulated and hugged him for such a great effort. I’m really trying my hardest to positively reinforce. It’s hard to break years of habit of focusing too much on the annoying stuff and to learn to focus much more on the good stuff. But focussed I was and I reckon he’ll be doing that room again without me asking.

These two moments drowned out a couple of times during the day when he lost it for some reason or another – mostly due to tiredness. But to top off the day it was good to have some time back to ourselves without having to do a hospital visit. My dad got out of rehab today after his stroke and has gone home.

Three years – almost the longest relationship I’ve ever had

April 14, 2007 by Jen at Semantically driven

Today I’ve been blogging for three years. Bloody hell, who’d have thought. Well not me obviously. This is because I’m a good one for starting a project all gung-ho and then the excitement wears off, but this blogging thing has stuck around, and I’ve stuck by it. We haven’t even had any major separations during the three years. Boredom, or bloggers block has set in occasionally but we’ve always come back to each other.

This was my first blog post three years ago and not much has changed since then as I just write pretty much what I feel like. I wouldn’t say I’ve got a niche or a particular subject for this blog, it’s more a place just to write as I feel passionately about the act of doing it. I don’t necessarily feel passionate about the act of writing something in particular to potentially earn myself some money, which would be great by the way.

My blog readership has grown just slightly so I’m not in a writing vacuum here which is one of the joys of blogging – the sense of community.

Here are three blogs I’ve come across lately that I really enjoy. I’ve only got three as my blogroll is growing as slowly as my readership.

  • The Life of Riley – a fantastic new blog by 107 year old Australian Olive, written by her mate Mike. I heard about this via Time Goes By and after visiting All About Olive realised I’d seen a documentary about her on tv a while back (apparently it’s being repeated on the ABC on 1 May at 11.30 pm – set your videos).
  • Jeanie in Paradise – can’t remember how I found her (actually she might have found me) but she’s also a sole parent (well maybe she’s not now) living in Australia. I like the way she tells her stories of parenthood, trying to find a job, and just living.
  • Freak Parade – am able to relate to a lot of what she goes through on a daily basis, in particular our sons have similar-ish issues. Her humorous take on situations makes for entertaining reading, and anyone whose favourite song is Jackson by Johnny Cash and June Carter has got to have great taste.

I said in my blog title that it’s almost the longest relationship I’ve ever had. It depends how relationship is defined, but when I wrote it I was thinking in terms of boyfriends and this time next year my blog will be winning. If I keep writing this blog forever, it will always win.
