Archives for February 2006

I just want to cry today, but some good news too

February 13, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

It’s my first day back at work after a big week of being away on holiday. Yesterday afternoon and this morning I was so irritable with JJ that I feel really bad about it and I can’t attribute it to my hormones so my only excuse is that I had to come back to work today. Not fair on him at all.

So while warding off the I-don’t-want-to-be-back-at-work tears this morning a couple of things have arrived, one in the snail mail and one in my work email inbox.

First of all I’ve been nominated to be in a new book called the Who’s Who of Australian Women. The same people publish Who’s Who in Australia. I have no idea who nominated me and I’m quite gobsmacked. They say in the letter that the traditional criteria for getting in the Who’s Who doesn’t encompass all the varied achievements and activities of Australian women. I would say my life is fairly unremarkable in that I’m not on loads of committees and don’t do community work as such but I think I’ll fill out the form and see what happens. How hilarious if I get in the book.

I also got an invitation via email to advise a National Institute here in Australia on the development of its new website. Not quite sure again why I’ve been contacted and while it’s quite tempting I’ve already got a job and this is only a very short term thing. UPDATE: They got my name from a Business Development Manager here and as I’m not actually a consultant, I’ve passed on the appropriate name.

Both these things made me think that my skills are probably more noteworthy than I give myself credit for.

Oh, and I won an award for excellence recently for online technical documentation that I have maintained and developed further, since it was initially written two years ago.

Back to reality

February 11, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

We got back to the mainland last night but managed to extend the holiday for nearly another 24 hours by staying at a friend’s place at Pt Willunga last night. This meant we went the Farmer’s Market at Willunga this morning for some yummy fresh produce and went for a swim at Pt Willunga before driving home.

Here’s a small taste of what we enjoyed at Kangaroo Island.

Sunrise at Vivonne Bay

This was not long after sunrise at Vivonne Bay where we were staying, with Monty in the foreground. I was awake about 7 each morning but always stayed in bed until this morning, our last, and the best weather. The beach was absolutely gorgeous and we had it all to ourselves nearly most of the time.

There will be more to come as we had some good adventures.

Off over to Kangaroo Island

February 2, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

I’ve been back at work for two and a half weeks and now I’m taking just over another week off to go away again. I’m taking JJ and Monty to Kangaroo Island as from tomorrow for one week so I will be out of touch until after that.

We will have no tv or telephone (out of mobile range) and we’re staying in a fantastic, private spot. It’s been four and a half years since we went and JJ was only 7 months old – he couldn’t even walk. There will be a few other friends there to keep us company so I look forward to walks along the beach, doing some touristy stuff and just relaxing.

Bye for now.

About bloggers

February 1, 2006 by Jen at Semantically driven

I’m fascinated by blogging, which is I guess why I keep one myself, and I’m fascinated about people and why they blog.

One thing that fascinates/interests me about other bloggers, and people in general, is what drives and motivates them. Sometimes it’s possible to tell what motivates and drives people just through reading their blogs, but not always as it depends what the blog is about and if it’s a personal blog or not. I presume, and I could be really wrong, that many people just feel a need to write and express.

One way to find out about other bloggers is their About section. Practically the first thing I do when reading a new blog, only one that initially captures my attention, is read their About page. It annoys me when there isn’t an About page as I’m a sticky beak and want to know everything about a person straight away. I know it’s up to the individual as to what they post on their site and if I really want to know about them I’ll read their blog right? The About page though, gives me some sort of context I guess – where they live, how old they are, what gender they are (if it’s not immediately easy to see on their blogs initial page), what interests them and if they’ve got anything in common with me that I might relate to.

As a quick aside, I would say the About page is a must on any professional website and a courtesy on a personal website. Personally if I land on a webpage and I can’t quite quickly find anything of interest to me, or if it confuses the hell out of me I will not stay on that site. Some context to what I might find on the website is not hard to do and potentially could make people stick around. Derek Powazek talks about Homepage goals on A List Apart (see Goal 1 down the page a bit) and says a home page should answer the question, ‘What is this place?’. Steve Krug backs up this premise and says and writes, ‘Don’t Make Me Think’ (we just got this book at work and it’s easy to read and full of common sense stuff).

But back to how to find out how other bloggers think? Some bloggers have interviewed other bloggers in both personal and business blogs. I’ve compiled some links to those interviews. The personal links are ones I’ve found in my reading of blogs and the ones I found most interesting. I found the business links with my good friend Google. My criteria for this search narrowed things down considerably, that is, bloggers interviewing other bloggers and having a section of their website devoted to it which is why I’ve only found two links in that category.

Personal

  • Leah Peah
  • chandrasutra
  • Rebecca Blood

Business

  • Problogger
  • Whatsnextblog.com

If I ever do further study and get that Dr. in front of my name this is one area that I could easily and happily research. Food for thought.
