Did I mention I went to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last night?

May 19, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I think I did mention yesterday I made a fairly last minute decision to go and see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at Thebarton Theatre last night. And I’m very glad I made that last minute decision. I got there just in time to walk in and see Nick on stage.

Nickcaveticket I love seeing bands at Thebbie because it’s big enough to cater for bands like Nick’s but it’s intimate enough that you can have a good view. If it weren’t for taller people it would be great.

They did a good mix of songs from the excellent new album ‘Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus’ album which I thoroughly recommend getting if you don’t have it already. I did miss them not doing Nature Boy though as that’s my favourite song.

Older favourite songs of mine they did – Deanna, Mercy Seat, Weeping Song – love em all.

What I don’t understand though is people that pay 70 odd dollars to go and see a band like this and spend the whole bloody time on their mobile phone. There’s one in every crowd, or probably more but I always seem to stand next to them. Two girls in front of me were speaking to someone on the phone nearly all night on and off. I don’t get it.

I think Nick Cave et al played for about two hours and came back on for two encores. The first encore consisted of quite slow songs and then the second encore he played Stagger Lee which was just brilliant. Nick is so full of energy and considering how much he smokes he’s very active on stage.

Don’t butt in on a conversation your girlfriend is having with a cute boy!

May 18, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I went to yet another party on  Saturday night. I had planned NOT to go to this one but as the time got closer I couldn’t help myself but decide to book babysitting and get myself along. It was another of those parties miles away from my house and therefore not the easiest to get home from if a bevvy or lots have been enjoyed.

I got a friend to stay over my house for the first time alone with JJ and another friend to drive me to the party. I cooked them both dinner to sweeten the requests somewhat and off we went leaving the babysitter and JJ home of course (JJ sweetly tucked in bed and fast asleep).

I’m glad I went to the party as it was good fun and I was on one of my social rolls where it was easy to talk to people and I got around and talked to lots of different people. One of these people was cute boy mentioned in the title of this post. I met him at least 15 years ago when I first started going out to see bands in Adelaide. At that time he had a girlfriend and I was besotted with a drummer. Years have gone by and now he knows another friend of mine (my drummer is long gone) so I see him occasionally in my social circle but have previously seen him with a woman.

We got chatting and were having a nice chat about what we’ve been doing in the last few years. JJ was mentioned and he asked if I was married. I told him the ever shortened version of how and where I got pregnant. I should have immediately reciprocated the marriage question but missed the golden opportunity. I should have learnt by now shouldn’t I? Anyway the conversation was cruising along when another mutual friend butted in and just took over. I hung around for a bit and listened to them talking about his ex-girlfriend so I now know he IS single but she still didn’t click that hey – two single people were talking here I shall leave right now. I was definitely out of the conversation. She could have brought me back into it but didn’t.

I shall be having words with her when I see her at Nick Cave tonight. Oh didn’t I mention I’m going to see Nick Cave? Last minute ticket buying on the internet. Can’t resist – love the new album, love his older albums – must see him.

So I’m standing there thinking how can I butt into this conversation or shall I just walk off. I’m getting better at extricating myself from what I perceive to be awkward situations but then another friend of mine came along and dragged me away to show me how she’d set up her car for sleeping in that night. I never got to speak to cute boy after that. I don’t remember seeing him so I presume he left. I’m sure I shall see him again somewhere around the place as he’s newly single and newly single people tend to go out more. Well, single people in general go out more when they can and he hasn’t got kids to tie him down so he’s probably out a lot.

The more lies there are, the more money for Channel 10?

May 17, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

These links for Big Brother Australia from the last few days are in no particular order.

  • Big Brother imposter revealed – Fairfax digital
  • Twin trick saves Big Brother – Fairfax digital
  • Michelle or ‘Harley’ – Entertainment news
  • Careful what you say Nelson – Entertainment news
  • Fans outraged at money pulling stunt – Behind Big Brother
  • Logan uncovered – Behind Big Brother
  • Tell it to someone who cares Nelson – BBA
  • Lies exposed – BBA
  • First lot of ‘official’ nominations – Ausculture

For the eviction next Sunday my pick is Geneva will go or maybe Angela. Angela is at least getting more time on our screens and so long as she doesn’t get up everyone’s nose she should be okay. I haven’t seen that much of Geneva to even witness her bitchiness that she got nominated for and don’t hold out on her entertainment value.

As for those liars, I think definitely Nelson (no you won’t win a car Nelson) and hopefully Dean (who?) will go. I think Constance has got more to contribute to the house yet, even though she did lie.

This year’s Big Brother is consuming a bit too much of my time and I don’t even watch Uplate.

  • First of the Friday night tasks – BBA
  • Stripper in the house last year – topless model this year – Behind Big Brother

I loved watching the games last night. I nearly wet my pants and choked on my laughter when Christie stuffed up her bit and kept coming off her chariot and running into the wall. Oh, that’s entertainment.

Thumbs up Australia Post

May 12, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

I was so pleased with the customer service I received the other day at Australia Post that I’m going to share it. Normally I would share the bad customer service story but the good ones need to be told also.

I had to post a young boys (3 years old) t-shirt to him so he could get some wear out of it before it gets too cold. I’d forgotten to take it with me on the weekend to give to him.

I put it in the envelope, addressed it, and walked to my closest Australia Post and the guy serving me tried to put it through the size thingy which distinguishes a letter from a parcel. Unfortunately it didn’t fit through and this meant a price jump from $1 to $3.40. He could have left it there and just charged me the $3.40 but he said let’s try to flatten this out a bit.

I said I’d tried to make it as flat as possible but it’s got a frog on the t-shirt which can’t be flattened. He undid the envelope anyway and had a go at adjusting the t-shirt himself to no avail. He could see from the t-shirt and how I’d addressed the envelope to Master I B-A that it was for a young chap so he said let’s put heaps of great stamps on it. He put a $1, $2 and then eight 5 cent stamps on it, stuck them all on for me and sticky-taped the back of the envelope where he’d undone it.

All this happened while more people were joining the queue to be served.

Thanks mate. I’m sure Master I B-A appreciated all those stamps when it arrived in his letter box.

Splendour in the Grass – or not

May 12, 2005 by Jen at Semantically driven

Yesterday morning when listening to Triple J a caller rang in very annoyed that he couldn’t get a ticket to this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival, yet when he looked on e-bay there were about 300 tickets for sale there at inflated prices of course. I noticed a similar thing with Adelaide Big Day Out tickets – but not to the same extent.

Then yesterday afternoon on Triple J’s Hack they did a story about this and rang someone who was selling a heap of tickets and naturally she did not want to comment.

Now I’ve just received a link to a story saying that these tickets on e-bay could be fake.

Personally I hope that these scalpers are left holding all the tickets they’ve bought but meanwhile the people who are genuine and really want to go miss out unless they are willing to risk potentially dodgy tickets and financial ruin. After looking at e-bay there are some people bidding up to $10,000 as at 3.30pm today so I guess this is quite inflated and they will NOT actually be buying their ticket as one caller to Hack said he might do. He didn’t care about negative feedback as a buyer.
