Monday, 12 September 2011, Day 293/365.
It’s Monday. I had a busy weekend. It’s spring and it’s windy and I’ve got a touch of hayfever.
My mind is blank today. And you?
Thursday, 8 September 2011, Day 289/365.
This day a week ago I had a day trip to Melbourne to have a peak at the new Spyro Skylanders Adventure game.
It’s a bit of an organisational nightmare trying to fit something like this in around childcare and there was no way I could have done it if a friend didn’t stay over the night before and take JJ to school in the morning. I had to be at the airport in enough time for the 6.55am flight.
I didn’t sleep much the night before because I was panicking about not waking up to the alarm, and hoping I’d have enough time to get from the airport to the event. Of course it was all fine but it meant that I got through the day on only a few hours sleep.
Afterwards I had a coffee with a couple of the other bloggers that were there but then excused myself so I could go shopping. When in Melbourne one must go shopping.
As I only had a couple of hours I just went into the city, got off the tram and walked the wrong way down Flinders Lane. This wasted about 20 minutes of my valuable shopping time.
I managed to buy a new pair of Birkenstocks, a summer dress and a small purple leather shoulder bag. This last purchase was so quick because I thought I’d better start heading to the airport and I walked past a shop, saw it, and thought I must have that. Went in to buy it and the shop assistant said she’d grab a new one from out the back. I said don’t worry about that, this one will do, paid for it and got to the airport with plenty of time to spare.
I also bought a souvenir for my son (the book of Oliver Twist). I don’t think he was too pleased with it but he likes the musical so I thought he might like the book. Time will tell. I also bought a little something for my babysitter friend.
On the plane on the way back an Irish guy got on and he had the window seat so we both had to get up to let him in. He was snuffling and blowing his nose and this was while he wasn’t constantly on his phone organising stuff. He told us he was going to Adelaide to buy a car. I thought he wasn’t going to turn his phone off but he did just as we started taxiing to the runway.
He turned it on again as soon as he was allowed to after we landed. Why is it that in Melbourne you can’t use your mobile phone until you enter the terminal but in Adelaide as soon as you land you’re allowed to use it.
After a busy and eventful day, I had a good sleep that night and it makes me glad that I don’t have to travel much for work, even though this wasn’t strictly work. I don’t think I’d like that type of job.
Wednesday, 7 September 2011, Day 288/365.
A suburban street. Not that much to look at on the surface really.
Usually streets like this are pretty quiet until some sort of drama happens to disrupt that quietness.
You see the news interviewing people after such an incident and they say that nothing like that ever happens here. It’s usually a peaceful place.
Five years ago an accident happened outside the front of my house. One minute everything was quiet, and not long later there were firetrucks, ambulance and police.
But mostly my street is pretty quiet and I like it that way. Now if I could just get cars not to treat it like a race track I would be happier.
By the way, the street in the image above isn’t the one where I live.
Monday, 5 September 2011, Day 286/365.
See how things are fairly even on my mantleshelf. I like things to be even and balanced. It’s the Libran in me I presume.
Tuesday, 6 September 2011, Day 287/365.
Am trying to eat more vegetables and less of the pasta and rice. I’ve never really made a stirfry that I like and this one was ok, but my son didn’t like it that much. I can’t win. He eats certain veges but isn’t that keen on meat and I think it’s a texture thing for him.
It’s hard trying to cook as healthily as I aspire to be and to please him. Damnit.
Sunday, 4 September 2011, Day 285/365.
Last Sunday was Father’s day and my gorgeous son made me a card. He knows that his father isn’t around and has had nothing to do with him and recognises that I try and fill that void.
In the past he’s made cards for his Pop and last year The Surfer got something, but this year it was me.
And what did we do on Father’s Day? We went to the Royal Adelaide Show. A great day for a father being hassled to buy this and do that.
We had a pretty good time but needed the odd rest so a seat in the grandstand to watch things in the main arena was in order.
We had a look around the various exhibition halls and some of the animals. We spent the minimal amount of time in sideshow alley. I hate how all the rides music trys to compete with each other and you can’t hear yourself think.
We did go on the ferris wheel while waiting for the fireworks to begin and it was cold but we had a great view of the night time show and surrounds.
When we were on the ferris wheel we could see another ‘ride’ that looked too good not to let the kids go on. At $12 each I think they enjoyed, no they did enjoy it. It looked like fun. You can see JJ below in his bubble.
Each person hops in their own deflated bubble then block their ears while the bubble is pumped up. They then roll into the shallow pool of water and push themselves around on it. It looked like a lot of fun.
Finally the fireworks.
The only reason we went to the Show this year was because I am earning money again. If I was still not working there’s no way we could have afforded it.
I didn’t spend heaps of money there but by the time you get tickets in, eat some food, buy some drinks, get a showbag and go on some rides it sure eats through your money.
I saw some families with three times as many showbags as there were people. Luckily JJ only wanted one that was around $12, and not one of the $25 ones. I steered clear of the lolly/sweet ones because I think I eat enough of that stuff and there was nothing else that I felt like buying so I didn’t get one.
I’m quite happy wandering around looking at the various exhibits and the animals and the various happenings in the main arena.
If I can avoid it I will for some years to come and then JJ will be old enough to go with his mates. Call me a killjoy but I’d rather pay the money to go and see a band or a movie, or go to a themepark where you pay an entry fee and all the rides are included.
Saturday, 3 September 2011, Day 284/365.
No, I didn’t grow these. They were a gift from a friend who came around recently. We hadn’t seen each other for ages so it was really good to catch up with her.
After we ate we got the ukuleles out and she had a go with mine. She was so enamoured of it that she bought her own the next day.
Glad I can help share the ukulele love.
Friday, 2 September 2011, Day 283/365.
Prakky recently wrote about seven technological annoyances. This is its sister post for seven things that annoy me about shared workplace kitchens:
Really, these gripes just boil down to people being lazy and not considering others. I know there’s worse things in life than a full dishwasher of clean dishes but a bit of consideration goes a long way.
What have I missed?
