Smiling

Party girls. Day 26/365.

Went to a party the other night and this is the only photo that I got someone to take that includes me.

We had a great time. The Surfer and I spent the first night ever in his Kombi, not that we were very long in there because it was a late night and an early morning.

I’m suffering from too much dancing sore hips but it’s hard to stand on the sidelines when you hear a tune you love.

I’m surprised I’m not also suffering from smiling too much sore jaw. I think the smile on my face just about sums it up.

What was even better was that I didn’t have to pick up JJ until midday the next day so we had time to get back to The Surfer’s place, have a spa and a bit of a rest.

The afternoon was very lazy and I didn’t feel too bad today.

Coffee break

Getting my almost daily coffee. Day 22/365.

Part of my daily tradition in my new job is going to get a coffee. I don’t walk around as much now that I’m here probably because it’s a small office and I don’t need to. At my old job I’d quite often go and speak to someone rather than email them so I got off my bum and away from the computer for a little bit.

Now I take a ten minute break and go and get myself a coffee, and one for anyone else who wants one. It also gives my colleague (who usually comes with me) and I a chance to catchup so you could almost say it’s work related.

I snuck this shot in – he had no idea. I do find that I can only have a small coffee. If I have a larger one it keeps me awake at night.

This building

Work building #workwed. Day 17/365

This shows the building where I work. It used to be a furniture store many years ago and the sign is still there which I kind of like.

More recently than that it was a pool hall where I spent a few nights here and there playing pool. That was in the late 1990s – before child.

Since then it’s been split up into offices.

And there you have it. A very short and pretty uninformed history of this building.

Stormy

Before the storms rolled in. Day 16/365.

Yesterday Adelaide experienced some pretty wild, wet weather for this time of year. Parts of Adelaide flooded and it got quite windy. Farmers are supposed to be harvesting but they can’t when it’s raining and the wind caused a lot of crop damage.

The photo above was taken in the morning, about six-seven hours before the storm arrived and there wasn’t really a hint, apart from maybe the wild clouds. That’s why I took the photo and focused on the sky because of the clouds.

I couldn’t sleep last night because there was a continual thunderstorm and lots of lightning to go with it. It’s now midnight of the night after and while I’m tired I can’t get to sleep.

Things ticking over in the mind – or my mind is as stormy at the moment as the weather was yesterday?

My second week in daily photos

Christmas is coming. Day 8/365

Into week two of my photo a day. The photo above is in Rundle Mall, Adelaide. Yes, the christmas decorations have been up for a little while now. My trial of denial is not really working about christmas not coming. I don’t know why I bother.

Waiting for the tram. Day 9/365

Aptly titled ‘Waiting for the tram’. Trams had just been in both directions which is why there was hardly anyone on the platform. It’s peak time of night for commuters. The tram shown is one of the newest ones and I’m dreading catching this type when it’s a really really hot day and it’s jam packed because the air conditioning is not very powerful. No wonder people faint on the tram. I’ve witnessed it happening to two people.

View from boardroom window #workwed. Day10/365

This was taken from the window of our board room at work.

Turns out he's quite good at lawn bowls. Day 11/365

My boy is a natural lawn bowler apparently. His scout group went bowling the other night. When I picked him up he was more excited about the can of free lemonade they got.

Keeping guard. Day 12/365.

Not sure if this is for sale or not. It’s out the front of a second hand furniture store. I wouldn’t want it in my house but I do wonder what he’s supposed to be saying.

One, two and three. Day 13/365.

The kids – mine and The Surfer’s. JJ is just about to throw the cushion at me. Little so and so!

Pt Noarlunga South. Day 14/365

Looking towards Port Noarlunga. The day before I went for my first summer swim. I was expecting it to be a bit cold, and it was until I got in the water. The temperature outside was about 37 degrees so it more than made up for the slight chill in the water..

I don’t know if this is the future of my blog, a weekly update in the form of a photo a day. What I think I’ll try and do is use the photo a day to tell a story of that day, instead of cramming it into a weekly update. As usual there’s things happening in my life I’d love to share but can’t. If this were just my private diary I would spill but I have at least two readers and they probably know someone that knows someone and word would get out. You know how it is.

Setting the record straight

Oprah’s coming to Australia to do some shows – you may have heard about this. I watched her show last week where there was a segment done by our own Network Ten’s Carrie Bickmore about what us Ossie’s like. Apparently she would have us all going to McAfe’s and having a cup of coffee.

Mmm, really? I watched this segment with my mouth open in disbelief. Really, coffee at McDonald’s? Oh no not I, and not many many other Australians.

I realised as she kept going on about McDonald’s and then as the healthy McDonald’s wraps came out to the audience that they were obviously a sponsor. I guess they paid a fortune for that little infomercial but how many of Oprah’s viewers would have us Ossies (by the way we pronounce it Ozzies) all sipping a latte at McDonalds?

There’s been an uproar over here in Australia about this on Twitter and on the web.

A couple of stories include:

So us Ozzies do love our coffee but not necessarily McDonald’s coffee. You can’t believe everything you see on Oprah.

365 project – a photo a day

I have always watched with interest people starting and some finishing a photo a day challenge. I decided I’d do it once I got my new phone with web capabilities and I finally got it one week ago. It’s been eight days and I haven’t forgotten to take a photo per day yet.

Below are days 1-7. You can follow my progress on Flickr. So far all the photos I’ve taken have been with the iPhone using the Hipstamatic app. My only beef with the Hipstamatic app is that what you see isn’t what you get with the framing of the picture so it can be a bit hit and miss.

Writing - Day 1/365

I’d just installed the app while JJ was writing a story. He’s right into writing at the moment. He even wrote something the other day and let me correct his spelling and re-wrote it. His spelling needs some work.

Walking the dog - Day 2/365

This was taken on our morning walk and it’s at our local oval usually used for sport, but you’re still allowed to let your dog off the lead here so long as organised sport isn’t being played and so long as you pick up its poo and keep it under control. My dog is deaf now so if she wanders off and I call her she can’t hear me. I have to get in front of her face and wave my arms to get her attention these days.

On way to seminar #workwed Day 3/365

This was taken on my way to a seminar on North Terrace in Adelaide. I’ve taken a similar photo using my DSLR.

Daily walk - Day 4/365

I obviously didn’t take this one. This is on our morning walk yet again.

Work Xmas dinner. Day 5/365

We had our work christmas dinner the other night so I took a few using the Hipstamatic app (this is one) and some without. The iPhone 4 camera works pretty well – I like it.

Selling the camper trailer. Day 6/365

This is The Surfer near his camper trailer that he sold the other day. We showed the people who ended up buying it how to put up the tent part. I’ve only done that twice now and really can’t remember that well what to do so I pretended I knew what I was doing while trying to make it look really easy. The people who bought it seemed really nice so I hope they enjoy it. The Surfer has bought a camper van to use instead of this which is why he sold it.

Waiting for fish and chips. Day 7/365

I ended up choosing this one for day 7 because JJ looks so so happy here. He’d been quite annoying this day after a really good day on Saturday… He was probably really happy because he was going to have his favourite fish and chips for dinner. We’d just been to pick up my sister from the airport.

And that’s my first week of daily photos. I’ll do an outtakes versionĀ  I reckon because there’s some other good photos that I didn’t choose for the daily photo. I couldn’t say what my criteria are really, but it’s partly a document of my day-to-day life I guess.

Have you done a photo a day project or point to people you know of who have?
