Margo, I don't know if we have girl guides any more here, as the girls are part of the cub scouts here.

Ali, I think the group of friends outside of school will help JJ too and the male role modelling will benefit too. Hopefully JJ won't get bored of it too soon.

Farmerswife - I started watching Star Trek on telly when I was getting up in the night feeding my son. I've always liked the movies though. I wouldn't call myself a hard core trekkie but I enjoy them. I loved Sylar from Heroes as Spock too.

My brother got a lot out of scouts. All I remember was being packed into a too-small room when all of the local troops got together for the boxcar derbies, awards ceremonies, and everything else. It does seem like the boy scouts have a lot more bottle drive, ect. type activities than the girl scouts do. I'm looking forward to my daughter being old enough to join scouts, though. I loved it when I was younger.

Our 13yo is a scout. He has missed the last few weeks and has been saying he wants to give it up, however, this evening his leader called and mentioned that some of his friends miss him and he realised how much he enjoys it and misses it too. He's said he'll start going again next week. He has gotten so much out of it and one of th major benefits, as I see it, has been his gaining a group of friends outside of school friends. I think that can really help them have some perspective if school is ever tough.

What great pics, and a fantastic thing to get into with the Scouts. I'd love to get my kids into scouts and girl guides but we literally do not have enough hours in the week.

So you enjoyed Star Trek to a point? My hubby and I went on a date last Saturday night and watched it. I loved it, but not sure if I am a Trekie, just yet!
