What a turnaround

Now, I don’t want to eat my chook before the egg’s been laid but this morning it was such a pleasure to be around my son.

This is on the back of a huge tantrum last night. These tantrums usually seem to happen from a really small incident and last night he thought I was interrupting him and things escalated from there.

This morning, he got up and got dressed, got all the breakfast things out (this is his job) and was really really polite. After breakfast we had a bit of extra time* (because he didn’t have serve three**) so I showed him, yet  again, how to tie his shoelaces and he actually did it all by himself.

He was ready and jobs all done ten minutes before we had to leave so he had time to have a bit of a play before we left the house. More often than not I’m yelling at him to hurry up because we have to go really soon. Of course the more I tell him to hurry, the slower he becomes!

I found a sticker and put it on his jumper to remind him that he’d been a really good boy and to keep it up all day.

An aside: on the way to school the other morning he was saying that he knew he couldn’t be good. I told him to be optimistic about how he would behave. This was a great thing to do because he then focused on how to say optimistic. He now knows how to say it and knows what it means. I need to come up with some other words like this for him to learn.

* We only had ‘extra time’ because the clock in the kitchen stopped working. Luckily I realised when I went into my bedroom and wondered why the last 20 minutes had disappeared so quickly.

** For breakfast JJ usually eats three Weetbix, a serve of Cornflakes, then one or two more Weetbix. If he keeps increasing the amount of breakfast he eats as he grows he’ll need to get up for school two hours before he leaves.

Music

A bit of gypsy music at the farmer’s market

Paprika Balkanicus at the Farmer's market

This morning we finally arrived at the farmer’s market and did our shopping. We were just about to leave when I heard some live music coming from inside the shed so we went to investigate.

I’d completely forgotten that Paprika Balkanicus were playing there this morning. They’re here as part of the Cabaret Festival. They did remind the audience that they’re normally asleep at that time of the morning but considering that they put on a good performance.

JJ sat down in one spot without moving for the whole set – about half an hour – and he even bought the CD afterwards with his own money. I told him that when anybody asks him what the first CD he ever bought was he’ll be able to say that it was this one.

They were really good fun and I’d recommend seeing them. It was certainly a good start to the day.

Journal

Where am I?

Just letting you know I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth. I’ve been pretty busy and the last thing I’ve wanted to do is look at a computer when I get home from work.

My Perth trip is coming together. Flights are booked and I think paid for. I’ve organised childcare for the one day that I need. I need to organise accommodation now but think I’ll spend some time in Fremantle and the rest in Perth itself. I’m excited!

My aunt is down from northern New South Wales at the moment. We went out for dinner the other night and then she, mum and my sister came back to mine for drinks. Mum and my sister didn’t drink. My aunt waltzed around the lounge room dancing and singing and she got me singing too. She said I have a lovely voice!

My son is up and down with his moods. We had a good weekend but he’s back to hating me. Last night he riled me up so much it was really hard to control myself. Grrrrrrr!

Anyway, busy day today – gotta go.

Web/Tech

Nasty virus

A nasty virus has been hanging around here all weekend. This time it’s on my computer and not in my system (touch wood).

I couldn’t even logon to my computer. I had a mild panic when I realised that my backing up strategy is nowhere near good enough. I thought through all the things (mainly photos) that I would lose if I had to reformat.

Luckily I think I’ve avoided that and have a working computer again.

I don’t know that all the spyware/adware/trojans or whatever you want to call them have left my computer but I’m well on the way.

I borrowed my sister’s laptop to do some research which was really handy as my IT support days are long gone. I found a helpful website – the Spyware forum and have followed their recommendations. I’d always assumed that with my virus and firewall protection I would be covered but obviously not.

I’ve also bought an external hard drive which now contains a backup of all my data. I breathed a sigh of relief when I finished the transfer to it.

There’s also been lots of spam comments coming through here so I’ve installed the Extended Comments Options plugin so that after 30 days nobody can comment. I’d had something like 700 comments on one particular post which skewed my popular post stats. I’ll shortly go in and see what I can do there.

Hopefully normal programming will shortly resume here.
